HIVEHICLE Portable Shower

There’s a particular kind of quiet that comes with wild camping. Parked up somewhere remote, doors open, no timetable to follow. It’s a simple way to travel, but staying clean can take a bit more thought than it does at home.

That’s where the HIVEHICLE Portable Shower has fitted into our setup.

I bought ours online and it arrived quickly, no fuss. It’s a small thing, easy to store in a cupboard or under a seat, and it doesn’t feel like a big addition to the kit. But once you start using it, it earns its place.

The setup is straightforward. It plugs into the van’s 12V cigarette lighter socket and that’s it. The cable is long enough to give you some space from the vehicle, which matters more than you’d think. You don’t want to be pressed up against the side panel trying to rinse shampoo out of your hair.

For something so compact, the water pressure is better than I expected. It’s not a power shower and it doesn’t pretend to be. But for a proper rinse after a long walk, or washing off sweat and dust at the end of the day, it does the job. We’ve used it for quick morning freshen-ups and for more thorough scrubs when we’ve been out hiking or cycling.

You do need a decent water source. It gets through water fairly quickly, especially if you’re not paying attention. We usually fill a container and keep an eye on how much we’re using. Once that’s sorted, having a shower in the middle of nowhere feels surprisingly civilised.

It’s only fair to say it isn’t the most robust bit of kit. Over time, water can work its way into the motor. Ours has seized up before, and I’ve heard of the same happening to others. For something at this price point, I don’t find that shocking, but it does mean you might be replacing it every year if you’re out regularly.

Even so, we’ve kept coming back to it. The convenience outweighs the drawbacks for us. Being able to rinse off muddy legs before climbing back into the van, or wash hair without hunting down campsite facilities, makes a noticeable difference to how comfortable long trips feel.

It’s also been useful when travelling with a dog. After a muddy walk, a quick rinse outside keeps the worst of the mess out of the van. It’s not glamorous, but it works.

I wouldn’t call it life-changing. But after using it for a while, it’s hard to imagine going back to trips without it. For wild camping, where you’re balancing freedom with practicality, the HIVEHICLE Portable Shower has become one of those small, dependable tools that quietly make things easier.
