Nestled in the picturesque landscapes of Scotland, Oban Holiday Park is a site that promises scenic views and proximity to the vibrant town of Oban. Overlooking the serene waters with a backdrop of Kerrera island, the park has always been a favourite for many seeking a tranquil escape. However, as with many things, change is inevitable, and not always for the better.
Upon arriving at Oban Holiday Park, one can’t help but be captivated by the natural beauty that surrounds it. Just a 10-minute drive from the heart of Oban, the convenience of its location is undeniable. However, the initial allure is quickly overshadowed by the evident challenges of the site.
While the park boasts of its facilities, there are pressing concerns that need addressing. The most alarming is the water quality. Visitors are advised not to consume the water unless it’s boiled, and even then, the disconcerting brown hue is off-putting. This is a significant oversight for a site that caters to campers and caravanners.
The number of level pitches is limited, and the absence of clear markings means you might find yourself setting up on muddy ground. To add to the woes be prepared for limited mobile signal, making it challenging to stay connected.
The saving grace for visitors is the proximity to Oban town. With its collection of shops, restaurants, a cinema, and even a golf course, there’s no shortage of activities to keep one entertained. For those who enjoy a good walk, the journey to Oban is achievable in about an hour, offering a chance to soak in the scenic beauty.
Having visited Oban Holiday Park in the past, the transformation is palpable. What was once a campsite that prioritised touring pitches now seems to have shifted its focus. The introduction of static caravans, while lucrative, has come at the cost of the campsite’s charm. The best pitches, which offered breathtaking views, have been replaced by these caravans. Touring pitches, which were once the heart of the site, now feel like an afterthought, relegated to less desirable parts of the park.
Change is a part of life, but when it detracts from the essence of what made a place special, it’s hard not to feel a sense of loss. Oban Holiday Park, under its new management, seems to have prioritised profit over the experience of its visitors. While the surrounding beauty of Oban remains unchanged, the park itself leaves much to be desired. It’s with a heavy heart that I can no longer recommend this once-beloved site.
